Researchers at Kobe University have uncovered a hidden key to orchid reproduction: wood-decaying fungi living in deadwood. Published in the journal Functional Ecology, the study shows that orchid seeds — no larger than dust particles — can only germinate near decaying logs, where they obtain essential carbon from specialised fungi. Seeds buried elsewhere in the forest remained dormant.

The findings close a long-standing gap in our understanding of wild orchid ecology and reveal an overlooked carbon pathway through forest ecosystems — with important implications for conservation and habitat management.

The Dracula orchids, beloved online for their striking primate-like blooms, are facing a conservation crisis. A new global IUCN assessment — the first of its kind — has evaluated all 133 known Dracula species and found that nearly seven in ten are threatened with extinction. Many survive only in tiny forest fragments, some in just one or two locations worldwide.

Deforestation, agriculture, illegal mining, and flower collectors are driving their decline in the Andean cloud forests of Colombia and Ecuador. Conservationists are urging community-based monitoring, sustainable land use, and eco-tourism as key strategies to protect what remains.

Colombian botanists have described a remarkable new cloud forest orchid, Lepanthes nasariana, found growing in the Western and Central Andes at altitudes between 2,800 and 3,600 metres. The discovery is immediately overshadowed by alarming projections: climate models suggest the species could lose up to 96% of its suitable habitat by 2090 under a worst-case scenario.

The researchers named the orchid after the protagonist of Gabriel García Márquez’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold — a deliberate reference to its seemingly foretold fate, and a call to action for conservation efforts before it is too late.

New research suggests that the orchid family first emerged approximately 85 million years ago on the supercontinent Laurasia — meaning they coexisted with dinosaurs. The international study by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, reconstructed the most comprehensive family tree of the orchid family to date.
The results reveal not only the early origin in the northern part of the Earth, but also how orchids later spread globally and established themselves in nearly every habitat. These findings offer valuable insights into evolution and may inform future conservation strategies.

In West Papua, international research teams discovered 23 new orchid species in nature reserves and rediscovered several species that had not been seen for decades — among them Taeniophyllum maximum, which was found again after 107 years. The discoveries are part of an ongoing exploration launched in 2022 in pristine rainforest regions, highlighting the immense untapped species potential of this area.

The new species are set to be formally named and scientifically published in the coming years — a glimmer of hope for orchid biodiversity and conservation research.

A new botanical survey in Kaziranga National Park has documented 70 different orchid species from 36 genera — including both epiphytic and terrestrial species.

The field study highlights that protected areas are not only important for large animals such as tigers and rhinoceroses, but also play an outstanding role in the survival of rare plants. This discovery strengthens Kaziranga’s reputation as a biodiversity hotspot and underscores the need for integrated conservation programmes.
